What size is A4 paper?

A4 paper is 210mm x 297mm as defined in the ISO 216 standard. A4 paper is the standard size used for printing and copying. Almost all printers will accept A4 paper. To understand “A” paper sizing it’s helpful to know that A4 is half of A3, and each number after the “A” halves the paper size. The table below lists the most popular paper sizes in millimetres and inches:

Size Width x Height (mm)  Width x Height (in)
 A1  594 x 841 mm  23.4 x 33.1 in
 A2  420 x 594 mm  16.5 x 23.4 in
 A3  297 x 420 mm  11.7 x 16.5 in
 A4  210 x 297 mm  8.3 x 11.7 in
 A5  148 x 210 mm  5.8 x 8.3 in

Which paper is best for printing?

For most printing the best paper is white A4 80gsm paper. This is normally purchased either in a ream (pack of 500 sheets), or a box containing 5 reams (2,500 sheets). 80gsm white A4 paper will fulfil most printing needs such as printing reports, invoices or homework. If you have an inkjet printer and want to print photos then specialist photo paper will give better results. Photo paper is available in both matte and glossy finish.

Can I use thick paper in my printer?

Yes, many printers will accept thick paper up to 300gsm in weight. Refer to your printer’s manual to check what the thickest paper it will accept is, as some will only accept 220gsm paper and others accept up to 400gsm. Also, make sure you change your printer’s paper settings to ensure you get the best printing results. 300gsm is a thin card and is suitable for crafting and producing documents that will get a lot of use such as restaurant menus. For reference, “normal” printing paper is usually 80gsm.
