Expert review of the Brother MFC-J5730DW printer
With a scanner, copier and fax function, the Brother MFC-J5730DW is a versatile inkjet printer. Be aware that this is bigger than many similarly-priced printers, but the bulky size has the bonus of allowing it to print up to A3. Some colours and details may be lost in the scanning function, but it is fine for general office work.
It will appeal to those with small businesses and home offices, and works reliably and quietly to produce good-quality documents.
Design
The Brother MFC-J5730DW is 530 x 398 x 374mm, and comes in black. Connectivity is achieved via Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB, and exclusive Brother apps make it easy to print from the cloud and mobile devices. It is also easy to navigate the printer using the 9.3cm colour LCD touchscreen.
It has two paper trays, both holding 250 sheets, as well as a 100-sheet multi-purpose feed. Print resolution is up to 4,800 x 1,200dpi, and the machine can print up to 35ppm in mono and 27ppm in colour when in fast mode. Its monthly duty cycle is 30,000 pages.
Advantages
The Brother MFC-J5730DW is an inexpensive machine and not difficult to set up and maintain. Large-capacity ink cartridges work economically and allow for fewer disturbances between cartridge changes.
With the option of printing on A3 as well as A4, the machine is versatile. Both text and graphics are good quality.
It can print, scan, copy and fax in duplex. It is energy efficient, so running costs are kept down, and it has Blue Angel and Energy Star environmental accreditations.
Disadvantages
The bulky size of the Brother MFC-J5730DW makes it awkward to use in limited spaces.
A4 and letter paper must be loaded in landscape formation, which can take some getting used to. The colours in copies and scans can be dull, and some detail may be lost.
