The Canon Pixma MG8170 uses Canon 4529B006AA ink cartridges. Canon 4529B006AA ink comes in black; the black cartridge prints 341 pages x 2.
Definitely eye-catching, the Canon Pixma MG8170 sports the same space-age look as the MG8150. It also features the same printing technology, scanning mechanism, key features, and stand-alone printing capabilities its predecessors have. This printer, scanner, and copier is equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity and follows Energy Star standards, which makes it a more environment-friendly choice. The Canon Pixma MG8170 may have a lot going for it, but isn't much of an innovation from the previous MG8150 model.
The bulkiness of the Canon Pixma MG8170 is disguised by its shiny black finish. It has the same rectangular body and domed lid that covers the flatbed document, photo, and film scanner. The LCD display measures 3.5" and features a touch-based interface that is LED enabled and disappears almost completely when not in use. The touch keys are purpose-specific, making them easy to navigate. USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi come as standard, and a USB flash port is right beside the memory card panel. The Canon Pixma MG8170 also features the same paper tray configuration, one in the front and one at the rear, along with a pull-out for CDs.
The Canon Pixma MG8170 still boasts excellent photo and text quality and compatibility with a wide variety of media. It prints directly from flash drives and SD cards, and the LCD can run slideshows from thumb drives. There are special print options and templates for A4 sheets, and print quality does is not compromised even when producing small fonts. Negative scanning is still a handy feature, and the dynamic interface is definitely an upgrade.
The Canon Pixma MG8170 is not superior when it comes to print speeds, although prints still come out at a reasonable rate (text/graphics/photos). It takes a while to warm up, and the ink can take a couple of seconds to dry, slowing down duplex printing. It is in the same price range as laser printers, but many satisfied users say that its versatility justifies its steep price tag.
