Aimed at the digital and film photographers, the Canon Pixma MP990 is a versatile and efficient multifunction device with an integrated colour copier and scanner. It promises photolab-quality prints and ease in printing with wireless connectivity, while its compact design makes it a suitable addition to a small home-based photo lab. However, it lacks an automatic document feeder and it could have been much better with a fax modem, too.

Design

Compact at 385mm in diameter and 470mm wide, and quite light at 10.7 kg, the Canon Pixma MP990 can fit small spaces and look discreet with its flip-top screen and collapsible output paper tray. Its print resolution is superb at 9600x2400 dpi. It uses the 6-ink InkJet technology, with an optional grey ink for better monochrome prints. The Canon Pixma MP990 can directly print your files from a flash drive or a memory card, as well as from your wireless device using Wi-Fi, PictBridge, and Bluetooth. The MP990 in integrated with FAU and Flatbed scanner plus a colour copier that can produce output in 21 seconds.

Advantages

High-quality photos and multiple yet efficient connectivity options are among the main selling points of the Canon Pixma MP990, but it is also often praised for its scanner, which can scan negatives and 35mm film using an adapter. It is significantly faster than its predecessor when printing in monochrome or in colour (11.9 ppm and 9.1 ppm, respectively). Setting up the Canon Pixma MP990 is also easy. Compatibility should not be a problem for Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6 because Canon already included the right software with a full set of drivers in the installation package.

Disadvantages

The Canon Pixma MP990 is a top notch multifunction printer, but it lacks a fax modem and an automatic document feeder, which can slow down productivity. Print speeds are also inconsistent. Users say that this printer is quite temperamental.
