Expert review of the Canon Pixma iP4600 printer
One of the high-end inkjets from Canon, the Canon Pixma iP4600 is a reasonably priced single-function device with the prowess of the company's well-known all-in-ones, minus the copy and scan functions. While it is supposedly a higher version of the Pixma iP series, its print speed is slower than its predecessors. The upside is that it does have a CD or DVD carrier for direct printing on discs.
Design
The Canon Pixma iP4600 comes in the same high-gloss piano black shell as most of this brand's inkjets. This smaller footprint model features a rear paper feed that folds up from the top cover. The Canon Pixma iP4600 has 2 uncomplicated control buttons for power and feeding paper into the printer or cancelling and resuming prints. Under these buttons is the PictBridge socket for direct printing from a compatible camera. The USB socket for PC connection and mains power port is at the rear.
Advantages
An economical option, the Canon Pixma iP4600 has 5 ink cartridges – two blacks, one of which is pigment based, and the other dye based for quality text and photo printing. A red LED indicator tells you if you have installed the cartridges correctly, and blinks if ink levels are low. The Canon Pixma iP4600 produces vibrant photos and crisp text — certainly much better compared to the print quality of the earlier Pixma iP4500. Double sided printing is a big plus. Expect the printer to slow down when printing the second side, as it lags to allow the ink to dry.
Disadvantages
In addition to slow duplex printing, the Canon Pixma iP4600 lags behind its predecessors at 12.8ppm for black and 11.2ppm for colour (normal mode). Cartridges produce high yields, but they are not as widely available. Double-sided prints are not as crisp as one-sided outputs.
