Epson DFX-5000+ Printer Review

Expert review of the Epson DFX-5000+ printer

Our Verdict:
star
star-filled

This dot-matrix printer is aimed at small offices that need a user-friendly device with versatile paper handling and fast print speeds. The Epson DFX-5000+ mono dot-matrix printer supports a wide selection of fonts and character sets, and it is cheap to operate, but the DFX5000+ printer is noisy, bulky, and lacking many important features, which may affect overall productivity among workgroups.

Design

The rugged and bulky appearance of the Epson DFX-5000+ dot-matrix printer make it seem like a backroom printer, but it can also be placed on top of a steady office table and connect to single computers via the serial or centronics interface. The DFX 5000+ runs on 20KB of buffer memory and prints using a nine-pin impact dot-matrix bidirectional engine, which is logic-seeking in text mode or unidirectional in graphic character or bit image mode There are two paper paths and various printer language emulations available.

Advantages

The Epson DFX-5000+ forms printer is fast enough for low volume output and simple documents. There are different paper feeding methods, which enable users to make copies of their documents or use various types of media from plain paper to labels and rolls. The DFX-500+ printer ribbon life can last up to 15 million characters. Automatic tear-off mechanism and paper width detection are the time-saving features of the Epson DFX-5000+ business printer.

Disadvantages

Dot-matrix printers are generally noisy, and the Epson DFX-5000+ is no exception. Complex jobs may take a long time to finish because of the low buffer memory and the 9-pin engine. Ethernet, LocalTalk, Type-B Coax, and Twinax are optional interfaces for the DFX5000+ ribbon printer. Printing in draft mode may be fast but the quality greatly declines with output looking faint and washed-out.
