Expert review of the Epson XP-342 printer
The Epson XP-342 is a combined printer, scanner and copier, ideal for use in the home office. It comes with the Print app for printing from any remote location using a smartphone, tablet or other compatible device, and Epson Email Print enables the emailing of photos and documents from literally anywhere, for printing. The bundled Creative Print app allows for customised stationery and printing directly from Facebook.
Design
The Epson XP-342 measures 15.3x11.8x5.7 inches and weighs 4.3kg, suitably light and compact for easy transport between locations. Interfaces are via USB and Wi-Fi, and ink cartridges, a power cable and software are included. The print speed is 33 pages per minute for monochrome and 15 pages per minute for colour. Print resolution is 5760x1440 dpi, with a nozzle configuration of 180 black and 59 nozzles for each colour. Scanning resolution is 1200x2400 dpi and uses a contact image sensor for unfailingly clear results. An LCD screen is used to control all functions of the unit, and has a diagonal of 3.7cm. The printer takes a range of memory cards, including SD, SDXC and Micro SD.
Advantages
The Epson XP342 offers a suitable combination of printing, copying and scanning functions in a relatively small and compact unit that will comfortably occupy limited space in a small home office. The ink cartridges can be replaced separately to save on purchases, and the option for printing wirelessly using the iPrint app, while retaining the option for connecting directly to the device, is a real bonus.
Disadvantages
The LCD and control panel on the front of the unit is perhaps rather too basic and allows for only a few operations, with little fine control. The paper feed capability may be too limited for some users’ requirements, and the oblong shape of the printer may not be everyone’s first choice aesthetically.
