Expert review of the Epson XP-442 printer
The Epson XP-442 is a dedicated, multi-function printer for documents and photos that fits in well with modern printing needs. Only the colours used up need to be replaced and the incorporation of Epson Connect means that there are many options for mobile printing from a remote PC, laptop or smart device. There is also a handy memory card slot that accepts a range of card types.
Design
The Epson XP442 measures 15.3x11.8x5.7 inches and has a weight of 4.3kg, making moving the unit around the home or office absurdly easy. There is a choice of interfaces with other devices, including USB and Wi-Fi connectivity, and the card slot to the left of the control panel accepts most types of card. The printer has a resolution of 5760x1440 dpi, which is more than enough for most needs. The scan resolution is also excellent, at 1200x2400 dpi, using a high-performance contact image sensor to achieve optimal results. The unit’s frontal LCD screen and associated control buttons provide the human interface with the unit, and the screen’s 3.7cm diagonal is clear enough for most purposes and lighting conditions.
Advantages
The Epson XP-442 is a good, compact all-rounder that cost-effectively provides excellent scanning and printing functionality, certainly sufficient for most needs. Its use of separate ink cartridges helps cut costs and reduce wastage, and using the iPrint app provides a simple and easy way of printing and scanning from remote locations, although the unit can also be connected directly to any device. Epson Email Print and the Creative App that bundles with the pack are also extremely useful.
Disadvantages
The LCD display, which cannot be tilted, may not be to the liking of everyone, and the large, labelled buttons can appear somewhat simplistic. The classic shape may also appear overly retro to some eyes.
