Expert review of the Brother MFC-J890DW printer
The Brother MFC J890DW is a basic print, copy, scan, and fax machine built with the home or small office in mind. The ten ppm colour print speeds are slow, which limits its appeal for medium sized businesses and workloads, but it does have a wealth of digital features including cloud connectivity and mobile print. Automatic two-sided printing also cuts operation costs over time.
Design
The Brother MFC J890DW measures just 420 x 341 x 172 mm without a carton and is lightweight at 8.5 kg. The compact design doesn’t mean limited functionality though as maximum printing resolution of up to 6000 x 1200 dpi is supported and fast mode fires pages out at a swift 23 ppm for colour and 27 ppm for monochrome. Recommended monthly volume is up to 1,000 pages. There is wired Ethernet and wireless network connectivity, in addition to NFC and hi-speed USB 2.0.
Advantages
Packing in print, copy, scan, and fax into such a small footprint is admirable and the all-in-one nature will suit the basic needs of home offices. Its sleek and space saving design means it can be stored on a desk and other small spaces. Print quality is not excellent but adequate for most needs, and there are a range connectivity options for quick and easy prints. The 20-sheet automatic document feeder is great for multi-tasking. It’s also possible to print directly from a USB drive.
Disadvantages
Paper output of just 50 sheets is low and consigns the Brother MFC J890DW to small work environments only. The maximum 100 standard sheet input tray is also typical of an entry level multifunction device. The 6.8 cm colour touchscreen may be cumbersome for those used to larger tablet-like user interfaces. Its maximum monthly volume is limited to 1,000 pages.
