Expert review of the Epson TM-U230 printer
The Epson TM-U230 is a high-performance 2-colour printer that has an unusually durable build, resistant to grease, steam and water, making it suitable for not only office but also factory and kitchen use. Its water-resistant casing has an antibacterial finish that makes it easy to clean, and as well as parallel and serial interfaces the printer supports USB and ethernet. These features all combine to make the TM-U230 perfect for use in a kitchen ordering system, where it can be easily connected remotely to a restaurant’s point of sale terminal.
Design
Measuring 6.5 x 6.6 x 10.2 in and weighing 5.95 lb, the Epson TM-U230 is an attractive and unusual shape whose smooth contours discourage dust and grime accumulation and make the unit very easy to clean. Print speed is 3.50 lps and it can handle paper thicknesses of 0.06 to 0.085 mm with ease. It uses a standard black ERC-38 inked ribbon and also prints in red, it comes with an AC adapter included. The absence of additional trays and feeds make it especially suitable for a busy restaurant or kitchen environment.
Advantages
With its capacity for high-speed printing and integrated power supply, this is a seriously capable business printer designed for use in busy environments. Its resistance case coating protects it against contamination by a range of solvents and liquids, and it can be mounted on a wall for added convenience and to keep it out of the way. The printer has a dual drainage system in case of liquid spillages, and there’s even a built-in buzzer which is useful for things like order delivery.
Disadvantages
The smooth lines and minimal functionality may make the TM-U230 ideal for a busy kitchen, but the absence of expandable trays will limit its usefulness in a regular office environment. Also, the lack of an LCD control panel makes it less intuitive to operate and obtain such useful information as print previews.
