HP Photosmart 8230 Printer Review

Expert review of the HP Photosmart 8230 printer

Our Verdict:
star
star-filled

The HP Photosmart 8230 is an ambitious device demanding recognition as among the fastest photo printers for serious photographers. It is great as a standalone photo printer that supports PC-less printing. Innovative additional features make it more versatile for a small graphics or photography company. However, HP has yet to find a better way to eliminate the grainy output.

Design

This printer is marketed as a new and improved version of the Photosmart 8450. Resolution is still 4800x1200 dpi (optimised). It is relatively fast and uses the high-yield Vivera ink system. The print engine has been redesigned, too, so the HP Photosmart 8230 has a smart reservoir system feeding from 6 separate ink tanks. The device's main strength is photo printing, but it is also capable of printing text fast. The HP Photosmart 8230 weighs near 8.5 Kg and measures 447x385x160 mm – certainly bigger than standard desktop printers. The LCD swivels for easy viewing. It features several memory card slots and a PictBridge port.

Advantages

Setting up the HP Photosmart 8230 is easy. It works great as a standalone printer, too; you can print pictures directly from your memory card or digital camera, so you don't need a computer. The printer is relatively fast, producing 31 ppm in colour and 32 ppm in monochrome.

Disadvantages

Those who want to use Bluetooth to transfer pictures to the printer would have to buy an optional (and pricey) adapter compatible with the HP Photosmart 8230. The 2.5-inch LCD screen may not be big enough for some people with poor eyesight. Some users report grainy photo quality and banding.
