Expert review of the Dymo 5500 printer
The Dymo 5500 electronic label maker supports the creation of a wide variety of high-quality self-adhesive labels of up to 88 characters. It can be used with 6mm (1/4"), 9mm (3/8"), 12mm (1/2") or 19mm (3/4") wide tape cassettes. It allows labels to be created with horizontal or vertical text, and it supports a variety of font sizes and label styles. It will fit easily on the corner of a desk and is classically styled.
Design
This labelling device features an LCD display that shows up to 15 characters at once as well as function indicators such as text size, justification and font characteristics. The Dymo 5500 label printer can be used by any office that requires high-quality self-adhesive labels. It is quite small and can be stored in a drawer when not in use. It can be powered with five AA batteries or an AC adapter. It is quite straightforward to use and features a QWERTY keyboard. The device tab-cuts labels to allow easy removal from the backing tape.
Advantages
The electronic Dymo 5500 printer can print on multiple lines, including up to four lines on 19mm wide tape. It also supports incremental labelling, which allows for the easy numbering of labels, in addition to a selection of special characters and symbols. It can be used to create fixed-length labels and allows personal label settings and symbols to be saved on a user-by-user basis. Labels can also have barcodes added with this device.
Disadvantages
The Dymo 5500 label maker is not a networkable device, and labels must be created directly from the included keyboard. There is no permanent memory to save personal label settings to – if the batteries or power are removed, then the settings will be lost and the device will return to its default settings.
