Dinosaurs roamed the Earth for more than 160 million years, from the Triassic period, 250 million years ago, until they were wiped out, supposedly by a giant meteor, in the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago.
Where does the word ‘dinosaur’ come from?
The word dinosaur comes from the Greek language meaning terrible lizard. The name was brought to England by a paleontologist called Richard Owen in 1842.

The first dinosaur to be officially named was the Megalosaura in 1824.

The heaviest dinosaur was the Brachiosaurus that is thought to have weight 80 tonnes. That’s the same as 17 African elephants.
