Brother HL-5150D Printer Review

Expert review of the Brother HL-5150D printer

Our Verdict:
star
star-filled

Nearly every company which has a hand in the printer market produces a mid-range printer that is nearly identical to the Brother HL-5150D. It is a straightforward printer that is meant to not take up much room, keep up with a low to medium volume load, and consistently produce quality prints. The specs are nearly identical to other Samsung, Lexmark, and Oki printers, so Brother has decided to up the print quality win over this large market.

Design

This monochrome laser printer comes in a bland off-white and is small enough to fit in even the smallest of office spaces. The front hatch reveals the 300 sheet input bin which can be upgraded to just over 500 sheets, including the multi-purpose tray. The sloped output well is directly on top and can hold around 150 finished prints. It can be connected to a network through a parallel or USB connection and comes with provided software for both Mac and PC operating systems. The base model comes with 16 MB of RAM which can be upgraded all the way up to 144 MB. The single-unit drum and Brother HL-5150D toner cartridges can be maintained through the face of the machine.

Advantages

If a consumer is debating between this particular printer and some of the other nearly identical twins on the market, the difference is going to come down to two distinct features. The first, and perhaps most useful, is the automatic duplexer. Very few printers in this price and size range come with a duplexer which is a necessity for many companies. The second feature is the resolution quality which the Brother HL-5150D toner cartridges can produce. Prints come in at a staggering 2,400 x 600 dots per inch for very clean lettering.

Disadvantages

There are only a few minor problems when it comes to this printer. The first is the sound level during prints which is a tad higher than what most would like in their office. For a busy or noisy office space, this will not be a problem. While 20 pages per minute is a respectable speed, the warm up time can push upwards of 30 seconds which can cause problems if the printer is going to be used intermittently throughout the day.
