The HP Colour LaserJet 3800n uses Cartridge Save 501A toner cartridges. Cartridge Save 501A toner comes in black; the black cartridge prints 6,000 pages.
An offshoot of the earlier Laser Jet 3600n, the HP Colour LaserJet 3800n has been upgraded with a faster processor and larger memory (160 MB). It supports PostScript emulation, which means it does not rely on your computer's processing power in order to print. This equates to faster text printing. The HP Colour LaserJet 3800n is slower than its older sibling when it comes to colour printing, though.
The HP Colour LaserJet 3800n leaves a small footprint at 15.7x15.7x17.5 inches, although it's not the lightest model, being 59.6 pounds. The machine features a fold down unit for easy installation of toner cartridges. The main paper drawer can hold 250 sheets of paper; an optional 500-sheet bin can be purchased for heavy printing requirements. The HP Colour LaserJet 3800n has 3 host-USB accessory slots as standard interface, and an optional 802.11 slot.
The HP Colour LaserJet 3800n prints at above average speeds of up to 16.5ppm for normal mode text and 5.3ppm for colour graphics. Print quality is good for both text and graphics, although there are occasional dithering patterns on images. It handles paper decently, is compact, and fairs well when it comes to running costs.
If you need a quality photo printer, you might be better off with an inkjet. HP Colour LaserJet 3800n does not handle photo paper well. Users often complain of blown-out highlights, grainy patterns, fine banding, and unnatural colours.
