The HP LaserJet 1005 uses Cartridge Save 15X toner cartridges. Cartridge Save 15X toner comes in black; the black cartridge prints 3,500 pages.
Though the HP LaserJet 1000 will meet most of your expectations, it does have a few rough edges. If you are in the market for a high quality black and white printer, the HP 1005 is exactly that. However, some blatant and obvious pitfalls stop us from giving this a glowing review. In any case, for small businesses and regular home owners, this is great for getting good looking monochrome prints. However, if you're in a business where quality is everything, then this may not be the printer for you.
The design is actually a bit of a deviation from the traditional HP LaserJet design. It's very light, and has a low profile when compared to some of HP's bulkier printers. However, with its small design, you'd think it'd have a small paper tray. It's quite the contrary. Rather ingeniously, the entire front end of the printer is dedicated to the storage of paper, and can hold up to 1,000 sheets.
The biggest advantage with the HP LaserJet 1005 is the addition of USB 2.0. This may not seem like such a huge addition to some of you, but it's a real lifesaver when setting up your network. There's no Ethernet port required, so all you need are the specific printer drivers to get it on the map for your network. This is fantastic, and really streamlines the process. Another great thing is the quality. It uses regular HP 1005 toner cartridges, but makes use of them pretty fantastically. The speed is a big plus, as the printer actually has a built in 270 MHz processor that quickens printing times.
Drivers are the printer's biggest downfall. Frankly, HP in it's ineptitude has failed to make a driver for Windows 7. This makes the entire process of getting the printer on your network more difficult, assuming you're using Windows 7.
