Our Verdict:

The HP LaserJet 5N is a reliable, efficient, and well designed monochrome laser printer built for small to medium office environments. The HP 5N black and white laser printer features a 600 dpi print engine, which boasts high resolution outputs for professional printing. It includes networking and is very economical to use. While the HP LaserJet 5N offers improved print speeds, it is still way behind many other laser printers that offer twice or even thrice its average print rates.

Design

Ideal for heavy office or personal use, the HP LaserJet 5N printer boasts a solid design. It is fairly compact at 11.8x17.4x16 inches. The Hewlett Packard LaserJet 5N workgroup printer has a standard paper capacity of up to 350 sheets (combined main drawer and multipurpose tray capacity), while busier offices may purchase the optional 500-sheet tray to increase input capacity. The LaserJet 5N prints on a variety of media types, with a maximum size of 8.5x14 inches.

Advantages

The biggest edge that the HP LaserJet 5N network laser printer has is its built-in network capability. Unlike previous models that only offer networking as an optional upgrade, this unit offers network sharing as a standard feature, making it more suitable for workgroup use. Text prints are very sharp, clear, and detailed, even when printing small fonts. Graphics quality is not as impressive from the HP 5N mono laser printer but is acceptable. The HP Laserjet 5N high capacity black toner cartridge can deliver a cheap cost-per-print with its capacity of approximately 8,800 pages.

Disadvantages

The HP LaserJet 5N network printer only prints monochrome document and print rates are quite slow. The HP 5N LaserJet can only produce as many as 12 ppm, which is far behind its competition.
