HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn Printer Review

Expert review of the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn printer

Our Verdict:
star
star-filled

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 Printer M401dn is a monochrome laser printer aimed at small businesses and home offices that require high quality output. It is efficient enough to be shared by small groups of users. The built-in duplexer is a time-saving feature that makes it more efficient for saving resources. Unfortunately, all the good features of the LaserJet Pro M401dn mono laser printer are overshadowed by the slow print speeds.

Design

This 11Kg black and white laser printer measures 364mm wide, 271mm tall, and 368mm deep, making it quite compact for a standard desktop. The LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn printer from Hewlett Packard runs on a 800MHz processor with 256MB of built-in memory. The HP LaserJet Pro 400 M-401dn features a protruding 3.5-inch touchscreen display for easy viewing.

Advantages

The HP LaserJet M401dn prints high quality text and its maximum paper capacity can be increased to 800 sheets. There is a built-in automatic duplexer and Ethernet capabilities. Paper handling is quite versatile with a multi-purpose tray that can handle 50 sheets at a time. The HP M401dn LaserJet Pro printer supports a range of mobile printing capabilities including web-based apps, Apple Air Print, and HP ePrint. Users can print high resolution 1200x1200dpi monochrome text and graphics. For cheaper operating costs the LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn mono printer can be run on low-cost compatible HP 400 M401dn toner cartridges made by third-parties rather than Hewlett Packard.

Disadvantages

Speed is the major disadvantage of the HP LaserJet Pro M401dn laser printer. There is no hard disk drive and the built-in memory is not expandable. The HP M401dn printer is quite expensive to run, too, and the output tray's capacity is limited to 150 sheets, which is insufficient for bulk printing.
