Expert review of the Kyocera FS-4100DN printer
Aimed at small offices, the Kyocera FS-4100DN is a fast and network-ready printer that is easy to operate on-board. It has ample paper capacity and a good number of optional features to make it more versatile for a growing workgroup, but it does not print in colour and it might be expensive to upgrade.
Design
This is a box-shaped A4 printer with Kyocera Ecosys laser technology. It weighs 14.6Kg and measures 320mm tall, 416mm deep, and 380mm wide, and with a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray and a 500-sheet universal paper cassette. The output bin can handle up to 500 sheets. The Kyocera FS-4100DN runs on 256MB of RAM while being powered by a 750MHz processor. The standard interfaces include two USB host and one high-speed USB 2.0 ports, while networking is possible with Gigabit Ethernet. There are slots for an optional SDHC or SD card and an internal print server. The minimalist control panel has an alphanumeric keypad so it is easy to enter passwords.
Advantages
The double-sided printing function reduces paper consumption, while direct from USB printing can save time. The maximum input capacity of the Kyocera FS-4100DN is 2,600 sheets, and the memory is upgradeable to 1280MB. The print speed is up to 45ppm when printing on A4 sheets in 1200dpi resolution. Optional paper feeders can be installed for more versatility and improved capability. Private Print feature is supported in the Kyocera FS-4100DN. An internal paper cassette allows for A6-sized printing.
Disadvantages
The Kyocera FS-4100DN can only print in monochrome. It is an expensive machine with pricey upgrades. There are no further options available to increase the paper capacity and memory of the Kyocera FS-4100DN, making it inefficient for high volume users and larger workgroups.
