In Ricoh's long line of all-in-one printers, they have labeled the MPC4500 their 'full finisher'. This printer was built with the attitude that no company will ever need to outsource any prints, faxes, or scans as long as this machine is in their office. While the footprint of this printer may come close to the size of a small office, the sheer amount of features and options make it worth every bit of space.
As with most of Ricoh's printer, the colour scheme and appearance of this printer leans towards functionality. The stand-alone design features a vertical stack of input and special media bins that can old upwards of 3,000 sheets with options for upgrading. The top of this machine houses the flatbed scanner and faxing output, while the printer output is along the left hand side. A simple display screen, pin pad, and navigational buttons control all functions while remote users have access through the Hi-speed USB, Ethernet, or parallel port in the rear. The drum and Ricoh MPC4500 toner cartridges can be accessed through a convenient side hatch. The base model also comes with 1 GB of standard memory and an 80 GB hard disk drive.
The MPC4500 can output both quality and quantity. With larger jobs, this printer can produce over 40 pages per minute in black and white as well as over 32 pages per minute in colour. Even after warming up, the prints remain very crisp and vibrant with 600 dpi in colour and black text. Faxing and scanning can be handled by remote users as well as on the machine's interface itself, making this an ideal printer for a large office or work group. This printer is exceedingly easy to maintain as well-constructed handles and hatches make replacement of paper or Ricoh MPC4500 cartridges a breeze.
There are two minor problems with this well-rounded printer. The first problem arises with the warm up time, which can take over a minute when the printer is used from a cold start. The second qualm comes down to scan quality. The provided software can enhance the scan quality to a very phenomenal level, but this takes time and the press and scan option can lead to some slight blur for complex graphics and colours.
