A black and white laser printer, the Samsung ML-1740 is a good choice for home offices or smaller businesses. The text is rendered sharply, with deep black tones ensuring that even lower font sizes remain crisp. This is a compact machine that will not dominate the available space on a desk, and is finished in glossy white for a contemporary look. With fast print speeds and a USB 1.1 port, this printer will meet the needs of homes that produce lots of printed materials or businesses with a small workforce.
Design
The Samsung ML-1740 measures 13.7 x 14 x 7.6 inches and it weighs 15.4lbs. Despite its compact size, this desktop printer can deliver a maximum monthly page yield of 15,000. It is compatible with Linux and Windows-based operating systems and is Energy Star certified. For single sheets, there is a hand-fed bypass tray and a dedicated output tray for labels, card stock and other media aside from plain paper. The cartridges are especially easy to load and the control panel is very straightforward with clearly labelled buttons.
Advantages
As well as looking good, the Samsung ML-1740 can perform when it comes to print speed, delivering 17 prints per minute in monochrome. The standard resolution is 600 x 600 dpi. To increase the printer’s performance level, there is a 66 MHz processor and 8MB of onboard memory. Toner Save mode can be activated at the touch of a button, and this reduces the toner consumption by 40% – an excellent feature for people who are trying to cut costs.
Disadvantages
Unfortunately, the Samsung ML-1740 lacks a duplex printing function, so users will have to manually turn over the paper to get double-sided copies. Furthermore, this printer does not ship with a USB cord, which could be an inconvenience for buyers.
