Expert review of the Samsung ML-3710N printer
A good choice for small offices that are keen to minimise their printing costs and carbon footprint, the Samsung ML-3710N is a monochrome laser printer. It can be used to create a wide range of documents, marketing materials or reports, and it is compatible with a wide range of media, including envelopes, paper, transparencies and cards of various sizes. The 600MHz processor and 128MB of memory enable it to work quickly to complete each task and the memory can be upgraded to 348MB. When space is at a premium, this compact unit can be slotted beneath a shelf or placed on a desktop without taking up a large amount of space. There is no wireless connectivity, but users can set up an Ethernet network to manage their tasks.
Design
Measuring 14 x 14 x 9 inches and weighing 21 lb, the Samsung ML-3710N is a portable machine that can be transported to other locations or to a different spot in the office. It is compatible with software from both Apple and Microsoft, and there is a walk-up USB port, as well as a USB 2.0 port that can be accessed with a flash drive. The paper handling is upgradable, but as standard, this unit comes with one 250-sheet input tray and an additional 50-sheet multipurpose tray. For the output, there is a 150-sheet tray. The duplexing function is automatic, and it can also be used to condense four pages onto two sides.
Advantages
Surprisingly for such a compact machine, the Samsung ML-3710N has a large monthly duty cycle of 80,000 pages. The expected resolution for all documents is 1200 x 1200 dpi, although this may be less if an eco-setting is selected. The print speed is 35 pages per minute, and the time to first copy is 6.5 seconds.
Disadvantages
In many offices, Wi-Fi connectivity is the norm, but this printer does not come with a wireless feature.
