Users looking for an affordable and network-ready but single-function printer can consider the Brother HL-2070. This impressive device promises speed with its laser technology, but it can be expensive to run.
Design
The Brother HL-2070 is designed to be a personal laser printer with a compact and low-profile boxy appearance. The paper output tray and feeder are discreetly integrated into the machine, and the 4 indicators (paper jam, power, toner, drum) are on the left-hand part of the top panel. At the back of the Brother HL2070 are 3 ports for a parallel cable, Ethernet network, and a USB cord. The toner cartridge and drum unit are combined and located behind a fold-down lid right above the front panel, so it is easily accessible.
Advantages
This Energy Star-qualified monochrome laser printer prints up to 20 ppm and comes with a 250-sheet capacity input tray. Its maximum duty cycle is 10,000 pages per month, making it suitable for mid-volume print jobs. The Brother HL-2070 is cheap but it is network-ready and can easily be integrated into a network with a maximum of 5 computers. Documents look impressive because of the clean and crisp text output.
Disadvantages
The Brother HL-2070 is a single-function printer and it only prints in monochrome. While it is inexpensive, the low-yield toner makes it expensive to run. The machine prints noisily, too, at 51 dB, which can significantly interrupt a quiet room. It is also slightly heavy for its size and single purpose, at almost 6.5 kg, and somewhat bulky at 14.2 inches deep and 14.6 inches wide.
