Canon L120 Printer Review

Expert review of the Canon L120 printer

Our Verdict:
star
star-filled

The Canon L120 is a monochrome laser printer with faxing capabilities, and features a built-in phone with corded handset. This multifunction machine is appropriate for home use, as its modest speed and small memory are not designed for a fast-paced environment or heavy use. Overall, this no-frills machine is compact and suitable only for light use.

Design

At 48 x 55 x 30 cm, the Canon L120 can easily fit into the home office. Like most small fax machines, it requires top media loading. The input tray can handle up to 150 sheets, and the L120 also boasts an automatic document feeder with a 30 sheet capacity. Its 16 MB standard memory supports 340 pages of queued jobs, and has 50 stations for delayed transmission. The phone interface is easy to navigate, with a digital display and a simple phone/fax switch. The printer is modest at best, with a maximum speed of 12 pages per minute, quite slow compared to most basic monochrome laser printers. Canon L120 toner is included, and this compact cartridge is easy to change and a breeze to maintain.

Advantages

The Canon L120 offers affordable laser printing, as long as speed is not of the foremost concern. In addition to a lower cost for the machine itself, Canon L120 toner is considerably cheaper than comparable cartridges, and users can expect 2,000 pages per cartridge. A built-in automatic document feeder is convenient and efficient for faxing. The corded handset is an unusual added feature for a machine in this class, and the menu options for the phone/fax are easily accessible from the printer itself.

Disadvantages

The L120 does not offer fax from PC or retain digital copies of fax transmissions as older Canon models did. It is also only compatible with Windows-based computers, and not network ready. The print speed of 12 pages per minute is slower than even most inkjet printers, perhaps not making up for the extra cost and space of a monochrome laser machine.
