Expert review of the OKI MB491dn printer
Aimed at busy work groups, the Oki MB491dn is a fast and network-ready monochrome laser printer with built-in duplexing, and a good print quality that can reduce waste and help save resources. Robust image processing capabilities allow for fast scanning, faxing, and copying. This is not the best device for printing graphics and images, though. It also lacks upgrades for the memory.
Design
The Oki MB491dn weighs 20kg and measures 42.7cm wide, 42.5cm deep, and 45.5cm tall. The interfaces are USB 2.0, a USB host port, and LAN. It has a 33.6kbps fax modem, a digital copier, and a flatbed scanner. The input capacity is 350 sheets for the standard tray, 100 sheets for the bypass feeder, and 50 sheets for the automatic document feeder, while the output bin can handle 150 sheets. OKI provided an LED monochrome print engine to the MB491dn, and it runs on 256MB of RAM. The simplified operator panel has a display screen for easier data input and on-board configuration.
Advantages
It can print directly from a flash drive. The Oki MB491dn is easy to connect to a network via built-in LAN. It can produce sharp and legible text with a resolution of up to 1200x1200dpi. The input capacity is upgradeable to 880 sheets. The fax modem supports super G3 and PC faxing, with ample memory for 100 speed dials, and 16 stations for one-touch dialling. The Oki MB491dn is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly to use. It prints securely using proven data encryption methods and IP filtering.
Disadvantages
The memory of the Oki MB491dn is non-upgradeable. It can print only in monochrome. LED printing technology produces graphics and images in mediocre quality. Operational noise can reach up to 65dBA when printing. The MB491dn does not have Wi-Fi and media handling is limited to plain paper and envelopes.
