The HP Photosmart 422 is a marketed as a 'portable photo studio' for personal or small business use. While it is generally promoted to serious photographers, the camera that comes with it is entry-level at best and may not satisfy the needs of professional digital photography. Some users complain of unimpressive and grainy output.
Design
Resembling a sleek and monochromatic boom box, the HP Photosmart 422 is a compact photo printer which you can take anywhere because it only weighs 5 pounds. The printer relies on PhotoREt III to optimise resolution to 4800x1200 dpi. The body of the HP Photosmart 422 is integrated with front and rear high-speed USB 2.0 ports for physically connecting to select HP cameras, your computer, or your laptop. There is a camera dock on top so you can use the camera's LCD screen as your monitor.
Advantages
This printer is often bundled with the HP M415 digital camera, which is a good deal if you do not have a compatible camera to use with it. The HP Photosmart 422 is compatible with PictBridge so you can print directly from your digital camera, too. Alternatively, you can print wirelessly via Bluetooth from any compatible device as long as you have an adapter. The HP Photosmart 422 finishes 'normal' mode prints in about 60 seconds, and 'best' mode prints in about 100 seconds.
Disadvantages
The camera supplied with the HP Photosmart 422 is not very good. It is an ordinary point-and-shoot camera with poor built-in storage of 16MB, which can only store a maximum of 3 high-resolution photographs. Because the camera is poor, the printer ends up producing grainy pictures. The Photosmart 422 lacks a built-in LCD monitor, so you would have to rely on the digital camera's screen to view pictures before printing them.
