The HP Photosmart 8158 uses HP 343 ink cartridges. HP 343 ink comes in tri-colour; the tri-colour cartridge prints 330 pages.
This versatile printer is not limited to doing photo prints but also documents, which makes it a good addition to a professional photographer's or a graphic artist's setup. The HP Photosmart 8158 is integrated with direct and wireless printing capabilities and can be upgraded to a 6-ink cartridge system for more vibrant photos, but is still lagging behind other models in terms of speed.
The HP Photosmart 8158 looks very similar to its predecessor, the Photosmart 8153. It has 4 memory card slots that can support xD-Picture Card/SmartMedia Card, Secure Digital/MM Card, IBM Micro drive, and CF I and II, as well as a PictBridge port. Another USB port is located at the rear, which can be used to connect the HP Photosmart 8158 to compatible cameras, laptops, and computers. The internal memory is small at 64MB and is not expandable. Weighing 15.5 lbs, the HP Photosmart 8158 is rather heavy and quite bulky, too.
The HP Photosmart 8158 is Energy Star certified and is cheap to operate. You can make customised frames and print borderless pictures easily. On-the-spot editing is flawless; it is very easy to improve brightness and contrast and remove red eyes. Photos can be zoomed up to 5x and rotated clockwise.
The LCD screen is rather small for some people. The two-ink cartridge printing system seems to limit the HP Photosmart 8158 from producing more vibrant prints. The optional Bluetooth connectivity is handy, but requires you to buy an expensive wireless adapter. Users running Windows 7 have to download additional drivers to make the printer compatible with their PC.
