The HP Photosmart Premium C309g uses HP 364 / 364XL ink cartridges. HP 364 / 364XL ink comes in black and multicolour; the black cartridge prints 550 pages, the multicolour cartridge prints 300 pages.
This high-end multifunction printer is aimed at homes and small offices that want a device crammed full of features. Although there is no denying that the HP C309g printer is state-of-the-art, it unfortunately sits in middle ground – the performance isn't quite there to make it an office printer and it's extra functionalities may not be of any use to your average home user.
The focal point of the HP C309g is the massive 8.9 cm touch screen display. From here you can access printer functions and settings. It can also be used to view previews stored on USB or memory card, you can even order the HP C309g cartridges thanks to the built in WiFi adaptor. Disappointingly, HP are still using their out-dated paper feed system which makes collating documents extremely fiddly and time consuming.
The HP C309g is well-connected; it comes complete with Ethernet, USB, WiFi and even Bluetooth! It also accepts SD, MS, SDHC, xD and MS media cards for direct printing. The C309g also comes with PictBridge support – ideal if you want to print straight from your camera. The printer also comes with extra functionalities you wouldn't expect from a mid-range all-in-one such as duplex printing which will help reduce your printing costs. The quality of the 4,800 dpi scanner is impressive with images looking crisp with plenty of definition; the same can also be said with the photocopier.
HP need to improve the print speed of the C309g for it to be a viable small office printer. Plain text documents are quoted at 12 pages per minute but under testing are nearer 8. Duplex printing is just as sluggish which is disappointing considering the cost. There are also some issues with print quality with text documents appearing slightly fuzzy and colour graphics lacking any real punch.
